Know Your Purpose - What’s your why?
As a young adult, I always wanted to own my own business and have the freedom to earn money on my terms. But I was forgetting an important point. What was I doing this for? Why did I want more freedom? This brought me to an a simple yet profound discovery while playing board games with my family.
Monopoly, Uno and Bingo are just some of games we enjoy playing. As I sat down to play a new version of monopoly and began to learn the rules, I was reminded of how important it is to know the purpose of the game. As I tried to learn the steps of the game, as simple as it was supposed to be, something wasn’t connecting. I felt stupid. Something was still out of place. I was trying to play the game and follow the rules, but I didn’t understand why we were playing the way we were. It didn’t make sense. When I finally read the objective of the game, everything started to make sense. I understood why I was doing what I was doing. I understood my purpose in the game.
Starting a new business can be the same way. If we don’t understand our purpose in starting our own business, we might get off track. We may lose sight of our real purpose and focus on the money. If we let our business control us, then we become a slave to it and we end up giving up our family time, worship time, relaxation and enjoyment in order to make money. We start spinning our wheels and just like that monopoly game, we start to question what we are doing and why we’re doing it. That is when we need to back up and look at the big picture and refocus on the objective of the game. Why did I really want to start this business? Is it to spend more time with my family? Am I giving up more time with my family just to run the business?
I decided to make 3 choices that would help me to refocus on my purpose.
I decided to work my business around my family time, not my family around my business. If I didn’t get every business task done that I wanted to, then it’s ok. Family and my time with God is most important.
Prioritize my task list. I will work on the most important tasks first. Starting with family time and needs first and then the most important business tasks second. If they don’t all get done, then at least I completed the most important tasks.
Put God first. For me, focusing on my time with God and studying the Bible, helps me stay focused on my true purpose. What do I want to teach my children? What example do I want to set for them and others? How can I be a help to my community and the world around me?
